Ever since he was growing up in Los Angeles, Brian Lewis knew he wanted to fly. He fondly remembers family outings at LAX where they'd park near the end of the runway at night to marvel at the big planes taking off and landing. After my last posting about the Redbird experiment with $1 avgas to see if cost is really the big drag on GA, a longtime reader sent me an e-mail saying cost isn't the problem, it's safety. This thoughtful fellow knows many people who have the resources and the travel requirements to be perfect candidates for owning and flying their own airplanes. But the risk in GA is keeping them from even considering learning to fly. Or more typically, the perception of risk by a family member is the barrier to becoming a pilot. Deadline for Gathering of Eagles Flight Training Scholarship Is September 30
The deadline for the latest Gathering of Eagles Flight Training Scholarship is September 30. This $7,500 flight training scholarship designed to help a Young Eagle fulfill his or her dream of becoming a pilot.

Applicants for the Gathering of Eagles scholarships must be between 16 and 20 years old, have completed a Young Eagles flight in addition to the Sporty's course, and submit a 750-word essay describing how the scholarship will make their dream of flight possible and positively impact their future. To apply for an EAA flight training scholarship, visit EAA's youth programs scholarships page to view a list of all available scholarship opportunities.
