Not exactly the flying car of science fiction but a machine that can hop over the ground traffic and obstacles that we all want to avoid. The reason I believe a helicopter can now be the personal aircraft for the many is MEMs. The same technology that makes it possible for copter drones to essentially fly themselves also makes the personal helicopter practical.

Member Benefit Spotlight EAA Flight Advisors
George Moore, EAA 381604, was on his third test flight with his Tri-R KIS TR-1 when he decided to push the "speed envelope," as he put it, bringing engine up over 4,050 rpm. The overspeed sensor triggered a fail-safe measure, placing the engine in an idling "limp home" mode. Moore had to make an off-field landing. Fortunately Moore's EAA Flight Advisor, Terry Lutz, EAA 69308, had previously flown Moore over the planned test area and pointed out various locations to put the plane down in an emergency, which he did safely. "That was the best landing of my life!" Moore said.

The EAA Flight Advisors program was designed to increase sport aviation safety by connecting EAA volunteers with expertise in specific areas of flying with EAA members who may be preparing to fly an unfamiliar aircraft. Today more than 500 EAA Flight Advisors are helping EAA members plan their first flight and advise them on training. Find an EAA Flight Advisor near you.
