EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is done for the year, and in many ways it feels like the time right after a great family holiday. Our crew, kids included, had a fantastic time. Sunday began early with the kids leaving in the Baron, piloted by a good friend, Hugh "Uncle Buck" Houston. Hugh makes a living flying 747s for the United Parcel  Harold Cannon
Service, so his piloting credentials are first rate. However, take a six-place twin and pack it with two teenage girls and two 10-year-old girls, and the mission becomes a bit more complicated. Add the OSH arrival and some ground time before the parents get there and well…there you have the "Uncle Buck" part of the story. Read more

Line Up and Wait
On September 30, air traffic controllers will begin using the phrase "line up and wait" to replace "taxi into position and hold." The Federal Aviation Administration issued the directive to put U.S. procedures in line with International Civil Aviation Organization methods. The "line up and wait" direction is meant to position aircraft for imminent departure, but does not authorize an aircraft to take off. It also cannot be issued if an aircraft has been cleared to land on the same runway.

The FAA reminds pilots not to cross or take off from any runway unless they have been specifically instructed to do so. You can read the FAA directive here.

Halifax Progress Report
It's been a few months since we last checked in with the effort to raise a RCAF Halifax of the bottom of the ocean near Ireland. In August 1945 while on weather patrol, this aging bomber sprung a fuel leak and, while trying to return to base, was forced to ditch off the Hebrides Islands west of Ireland. Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) was formed to eventually raise and restore this bomber. Read the update

Updates on Government Issues and Advocacy
Draft Advisory Circular Seeks Improved AB Safety, Avoids Aircraft Limitations
The FAA, through a joint effort with EAA, is finalizing an advisory circular whose objective is to improve safety with individuals transitioning into experimental aircraft. With this effort one of EAA's additional objectives is to improve the safety record for those transitioning in to a new experimental aircraft and avoid a need for the FAA to consider additional regulations and operating limitations on experimental aircraft. The program stresses transition training and guidance to pilots who are the "second owners" of experimental category aircraft and those pilots who have never flown amateur-built aircraft. Read more
Too Early for EPA to Make Fuels Assessment
GA Avgas Coalition maintains more data needed before decision The Environmental Protection Agency currently does not have sufficient data to make a determination on lead emissions from aircraft engines, according to GA Avgas Coalition comments submitted by EAA and other aviation and petroleum associations to the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday.

Revised Certification Rules Released - Effective April 2011
The FAA issued a new version of their Airworthiness Certification of Aircraft and Related Products handbook, FAA Order 8130.2G. EAA staff is still reviewing the document to determine what changes have been made to the certification and operating limitations for experimental light-sport, amateur-built, and exhibition aircraft, and for special light-sport aircraft. Owners and operators are cautioned to make sure your aircraft is being assessed to the current standard. Read more

Rare Warbird Emerges from 65-Year Dive
A Curtiss-Wright SB2C-4 Helldiver, submerged under 90 feet of water for that past 65 years and raised to the surface last week, is headed to Florida where plans are to restore and put it on display at Pensacola's National Naval Aviation Museum. The rare World War II-era airplane emerged Thursday, August 19, from the Lower Otay Reservoir near San Diego, California. The Helldiver
salvage firm A&T Recovery of Chicago, which specializes in underwater recoveries, worked for several days to free the airframe from mud and debris before a crane lifted the mud-covered but remarkably intact relic to the shore. Read more
Remarkable Sonar Image Shows Intact German WWII Bomber
"At 1142 hours, 264 Squadron was ordered to take off and patrol Dover, to intercept enemy bombers." So begins a typically terse and understated British Royal Air Force Fighter Command Combat report posted on August 26, 1940, in the midst of what was to become known as the "Battle of Britain." Operating briefly out of RAF Hornchurch, near London, 264 Squadron flew Boulton-Paul Defiant turret-armed fighters, airplanes that would be relegated exclusively to night operations just days after this particular sortie. Read more

Battle of Britain Turret Fighter Doomed by Rapidly Evolving Tactics
Last week (September 10) we told you the story of a Dornier 17 that was discovered at the bottom of the English Channel 70 years after being shot down by a Boulton Paul Defiant "turret fighter" in August 1940. As it turns out for the
Defiants, that engagement would essentially mark their end as a frontline fighter in the Battle of Britain. The 290-mph Defiant was obsolete and vulnerable almost before it was deployed in May 1940. The aircraft was designed to attack unescorted bombers by flying in large formations while the "turret gunners" used a dorsal mounted turret to fire at incoming bombers with four 7.7-mm Browning machine guns. Spitfire Crash Mars 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain
Rare Spitfire flips on landing in Norway killing pilot
A Mk XVIII Spitfire flipped on landing last month at Tynset Airfield in Norway, killing the pilot. Bertil Gerhardt was arriving in advance of a weekend air show
when the accident occurred. Photos of the crash show the aircraft was mostly undamaged except for the nose, vertical tail, and cockpit windscreen. Read more
Honor Flight Video Released by American Airlines
EAA AirVenture 2010 featured “Salute to Veterans,” a weeklong series of events including an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., for Wisconsin veterans. In partnership with American Airlines, the Northeast Wisconsin hub of the Honor Flight Network, and EAA, 80  Honor flight
veterans boarded “Flagship Liberty,” an American Airlines 737, on AeroShell Square Thursday, July 30, and flew to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Memorial. Read more
ScottsMiracle-Gro Warbird Alley Dedicated During AirVenture

Warbirds in Review Popular at AirVenture
Warbirds in Review became part of the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh scene in 2003, bringing a close-up look at some of the most storied military aircraft to ever darken the skies. This year, a total of 13 presentations were given, and each program became an instant Warbirds in Review
classic as the popularity of the programs allowed for a second presentation to be added to each day's schedule. With the help of karaoke equipment, Warbirds in Review has grown steadily in the past seven years. Read more
B-25s Re-Create Doolittle Takeoff
Stop us if you have seen this before, but we think you probably haven't. In 1995 as part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of World War II, three B-25s, one F6F Hellcat, an F4F Wildcat, and one Marine F4U Corsair were lifted onto the deck of the USS Carl Vinson B-25 takeoff
(CVN-70) while it was docked both in San Francisco Bay and Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. The modern nuclear carrier then steamed out of Pearl and into the open ocean to launch the new/old squadron. The deck of the Vinson may have been longer than the boats used by these aircraft when they were last operational, but that didn't stop the flight crews from showing just how quickly they could get airborne. B-24 Stars in Rap Video
It may not be your first choice of music, but Granger Smith, in the tradition of Kid Rock, has created an homage to the B-24. Enlisted in the production is the Collings Foundation's B-24J Witchcraft, which participated in both static and aerial filming. The fast-paced music video B-24
features Granger extolling the virtues of flying above crowded streets but lamenting about the cost of fuel. Watch the video

Six Turnin' and Four Burnin'

In this clip from Strategic Air Command you will see the involved process needed to launch a B-36. The sequence was filmed at Carswell Air Force Base near Fort Worth, Texas, and shows start-up of all 10 engines (six piston and four jet), taxi, and takeoff. The pairs of jet engines on the wings were used as an extra boost to help with takeoffs. Look for the familiar voices of Harry Morgan and Jimmy Stewart.

P-51 and B-17 Cockpits in Hi-Def
This series of photos are high-definition views of a P-51 and B-17 cockpit, almost as if you were sitting inside. Controls on the lower left allow you to rotate the image in any direction. The P51C Mustang Tuskegee Airmen is owned and operated by the Commemorative Air Force. The B-17G was used in the filming of "Memphis Belle" and is owned by the Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation. Both photos were taken by Pat St. Clair at the annual Geneseo Air Show in Geneseo, New York, home of the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group Museum.

EAA Radio Major General Pat Halloran
In 1949, Pat Halloran began his Air Force career, starting slow by flying the AT-6 trainer before reaching some of the fastest speeds in the world as a pilot and commander of an SR-71 squadron. During AirVenture 2010 Pat talked with EAA Radio's Steve Buss during EAA Radio live about the many flying experiences he has had.
